Iranian Patient Recovered with "Brain Pacemaker"

Iranian patient recovered with “brain pacemaker”

45-year-old A.R., who could not fulfill his daily life activities due to Parkinson's disease, returned to his normal life after the “ brain pacemaker ” operation.

A.R., who started to experience tremors, stiffness and tension in his right hand and the right side of his body about 10 years ago, learned that he had Parkinson's disease as a result of evaluations. After this diagnosis at a young age, he was treated with medication for a long time, but there was no significant reduction in his complaints. When doctors told him that there was no other treatment option, A.R. sought treatment in a different country as a last resort.

After the treatment A.R., described his experiences with the following words:
“I was not getting any response to the treatment. While Parkinson's usually occurs at an advanced age, the fact that I developed it at a young age was very difficult for me. While researching treatment options, I met with neurosurgeons and neurosurgeons. I got my hopes up after the evaluations.”

Can write, do daily tasks

Stating that her quality of life has significantly improved after the surgery, A.R. said that her senses of taste and smell have returned, her writing skills have improved and she can now easily do many tasks that she could not do before. He said that the pressure on his right side is gone, he can use his legs more comfortably and he can continue his daily life independently.

Two-stage operation

Brain and Neurosurgery Specialist Selçuk Göçmen gave information about the treatment process. Stating that brain pacemaker surgery is a two-stage operation, Göçmen stated that in the first stage, electrodes are placed in the brain, and in the second stage, the system is completed by placing the battery generator in the vücud.

Stating that the deep brain stimulation method was deemed appropriate for the patient after detailed evaluations, Selçuk Göçmen stated that a significant improvement in the patient's life activities was achieved after the operation and the treatment process was successfully completed.
