AwakeBrainSurgery

Awake Brain Surgery is an advanced surgery for tumors adjacent to the speech or movement center, performed without the patient being put to sleep and by talking to the doctor. While the tumor is removed, the patient's functions are tested instantly. Thus, sensitive areas are protected, the risk of speech loss or paralysis is minimized and safe treatment is provided.

Awake Brain Surgery

WHAT IS SLEEPING BRAIN SURGERY?

An awake craniotomy (Awake craniotomy) is an operation in which the surgical procedure is performed while the patient is awake (without general anesthesia) in order to treat certain nöroological problems such as brain tümörs or epilepsy.

If the center of your Tümörünüzünüor nöbet focus is close to the important centers of your brain, movement, speech, reading, writing, vision bölüIf it is close to the important centers of your brain, you can stay awake during the surgical procedure, responding to the questions asked to you, controlling your speech, vision and movements, and ensuring that the surgery is performed without serious complications in the patient. In short, thanks to this procedure, the possibility of losing your functions that are very important in human life, such as paralysis, inability to speak, and blindness after surgery, will be minimized.
The dose adjustment of anesthesia drugs to be administered during anesthesia should be performed by experienced anesthesiologists as it occurs in a very sensitive and narrow range. Since it is an anesthesia technique that requires teamwork, surgeon-anesthesiologist cooperation is extremely important.

Does the patient feel pain during surgery?

The patient does not feel any pain during awake surgery. Without general anesthesia, only the area to be operated on is numbed (local anesthesia agents) and the patient is relaxed with a light dose of sedation (stunning). While the brain tümörü ç is being removed, a continuous nöroological examination is performed by talking to the patient.

The patient must be compliant during this surgery. If the patient cannot adapt, the operation should be performed under general anesthesia. Awake surgery is not preferred in long-lasting surgeries and in patients with diseases such as asthma.

In awake brain surgery:

1) In lesions localized in sensitive brain regions,

2) In patients who are conscious and compliant,

3) It can be done with the risk of bleeding and nöbet within normal limits.

4) The patient should be able to lie on his/her back or side during surgery.

5) Special mönitorization procedures and nöronavigation can be used during surgery.

6) Absence of complications related to general anesthesia,

7) Short intensive care hospitalization period is an important advantage.

These surgeries, which cannot be performed in every center, can be successfully performed as a result of Prof. Dr. Selçuk Göçmen’s long experience and experience. The surgical team, experience and hybrid operating room are important for success.
