PATIENT STORY
Get rid of 7 years of pain in 4 hours
A young university student was unable to find out the cause of his severe head and neck pain for about 7 years. As a result of the examinations, he was diagnosed with congenital cerebellum prolapse. Although he experienced great anxiety when he learned the diagnosis, he regained his health after a successful surgery.
Years of complaints
Head and neck pain, which started in adolescence, started to make daily life difficult. There were periods when complaints increased due to the intensity of classes, exam stress and prolonged sitting. From time to time, symptoms such as loss of balance, headache and swallowing difficulties were added to the picture.
The patient, who thought that these complaints were temporary for a long time, consulted a doctor again when the pain became increasingly severe. As a result of further tests, the diagnosis of cerebellar prolapse was confirmed.
“Nothing to fear”
In the treatment process, neurosurgery was consulted with the guidance of a physician specialized in physical therapy and rehabilitation. In the evaluations made, it was stated that surgical treatment was necessary. The patient was told that the surgery to be performed under appropriate conditions would yield positive results.
Although there was initial indecision, the decision to operate was taken due to increasing complaints.
4-hour surgery, fast recovery
The operation was performed as planned and lasted approximately 4 hours. After the operation, the patient recovered in a short time. He was discharged only 2 days after the operation.
The patient described her experience as follows:
“I had pain that affected my life for years. Even when I woke up in the morning, I could not imagine that I would have a pain-free day. If I had not had the surgery, my loss of balance and swallowing problems could have progressed.”
What did his doctor say?
Cerebrospinal and Neurosurgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Selçuk Göçmen stated that the prolapse of the cerebellum causes pressure in the spinal canal as a result of examination and examination.
In his statement, he included the following statements:
“Cerebellum prolapse can cause headaches, loss of balance and swallowing problems by disrupting the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid. With surgical treatment in appropriate patients, this pressure is eliminated and patients can return to their daily lives in a healthy way.”
In the postoperative controls, it was observed that the complaints were significantly reduced and the fluid circulation was normalized in MRI scans.
Starting a new lifeç
After the surgery, the patient returned to her daily life without pain. She stated that she was able to do the activities she could not do for a long time again and her quality of life improved significantly.
