Brain metastases occur when cancer that starts in another part of the body spreads through the bloodstream to the tissues, membranes or skull of the brain. Lung, breast, skin (melanoma), böbrek and colorectal cancers are among the most common cancers that metastasize to the brain.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the most valuable methods for diagnosing brain metastases. Computed tomography (CT) and PET-CT can also help in some cases. In case of suspicious lesions, a brain biopsy may be required for definitive diagnosis.
