Nerve Pinching Affects Women More

Nerve compression affects women more

Nerve compression in any anatomical region of the body is one of the most important health problems that negatively affect the quality of life. It is stated that nerve compression is more common in women between the ages of 40 & 60. It is stated that the risk increases in people who use their hands and wrists intensively.

Brain and Neurosurgery Specialist Selçuk Göçmen stated that pinched nerves are more common in pianists, hairdressers, computer operators, bankers, dentists, sculptors and women who are heavily involved in housework.

How does a pinched nerve start?

Stating that the symptoms of nerve compression can vary depending on the affected nerve, Selçuk Göçmen stated that the symptoms, which usually start with numbness, pain and tingling, can progress when left untreated and can lead to güçsüweakness and muscle wasting.

Factors that can cause nerve compression

Selçuk Göçmen stated that the following factors are among the causes of nerve compression:

  • Diabetes

  • Menopause

  • Posture and sitting disorders

  • Sudden weight loss or weight gain

  • Rheumatic diseases

  • Thyroid diseases

  • Traumas and falls

  • Fractures and displaced bones

  • Pregnancy

  • Tümörler

  • Repeated wrong movements

  • Long-term incorrect sitting and lying positions

It was emphasized that frequent and severe bending and twisting of the wrists, carrying heavy weights and staying in the same position for a long time increase the risk.

It can affect writing and how you write

It was stated that if nerve compression is left untreated, serious impairments in daily activities can occur. It was stated that simple tasks such as carrying bags, writing and holding glasses may become difficult in nerve compression in the hand region.

In advanced cases of olive nerve compression in the leg region, problems such as inability to walk, slouching of the foot, sticking of the foot to the ground, inability to climb stairs, and inability to use the vehicle can develop.

Severe cases of pinched nerves are treated surgically

Selçuk Göçmen stated that rest, rehabilitation, medication treatment and, if necessary, cortisone injections can be applied in mild and moderate olive nerve compression. However, if recovery cannot be achieved with these methods or if advanced nerve compression is detected in the examinations, surgical treatment is appropriate.

He stated that in open surgery, the structures that create pressure on the nerve are released, while in endoscopic surgery, the procedure is performed with the help of a camera through small incisions. He stated that the surgeries are usually short and that patients can be discharged in a short period of time most of the time.

7 ways to protect the nerves

  • Pay attention to the correct position when sitting, lying and standing

  • Do not stay in the same position for a long time

  • Do not sit cross-legged or cross-legged for long periods

  • To avoid repetitive hand and wrist movements

  • Do not hold your wrists for long periods of time while using the computer

  • To avoid carrying excessive weight

  • Do regular stretching and stretching exercises

It was emphasized that people with risk factors such as diabetes, gout or rheumatological diseases should not neglect regular check-ups.
